2 Million U.S. adults meet the diagnostic criteria for a gambling disorder in a given year. More Adolescents Gamble than Use Tobacco, Hard Liquor, and Marijuana. Gambling is the “hidden addiction” that goes unnoticed by family members and friends until physical, financial and emotional consequences have stacked up.
The facts:
- 15 percent of Americans gamble at least once per week. (National Council on Gambling)
- Sixty-eight percent of youth ages 14 to 21 have gambled in the last year; of this number, 2.1 percent struggle with a gambling addiction.
- Forty-four percent of youth with a gambling problem report that they started gambling with a parent or another family member.
- Gambling has the highest suicide rate of all addictions.
